Making people care

  • Dec. 16th, 2009 at 9:57 AM
Okay, I have to clean the house in the next two hours (minimum) and I keep getting distracted and wasting time. So, here's the list of things I need to do.

1. Clean table
2. 1st load dishes
3. 1st load laundry
4. Put laundry in bedroom
5. Take out trash
6. Put boxes in corner

7. Put presents in box to ship
8. Get sewing stuff off floor
9. Hang coats
10. 2nd load laundry
11. 2nd load dishes</de>

I'll update this as things get done. Countdown starts 10:00 a.m. Central Time.

Yay! Okay. Emily did all the dishes. I have the second and third loads of laundry in progress downstairs! The table isn't perfectly clean but it no longer looks like a dumping place for everything. The person this cleaning-up is for should be here in the next half hour. The house isn't perfect, but it's acceptable. Yay!

It's Not Binary!

EDIT: The code has been rolled back. Thank you everyone who spoke up about how this is a problem!

LJ is going to change our profiles. Specifically, you will be very soon required to select "male" or "female" as your "gender." This is most likely done to target ads - diet pills for the females, porn for the men.

This is a problem.

Suggested action: change your profile to "unspecified" right now, and send LJ a message about how you don't approve of this change. Even if you do fit into one of these categories, speak up for those people who are marginalized and don't.

Send feedback for LJ here.
Or leave a comment on this entry, in [info]changelog, which is where this first came up.
Or, send an e-mail to Anjelika Petrochenko, US general manager: anjelika@livejournalinc.com

Please spread the word on this fast. This change will probably happen soon - Thursday or Friday.

(Note: there was a suggestion that it would become mandatory for users to display their gender publicly. This has since been changed, but it seems that you will still be forced to specify for LJ's purposes. LJ is claiming the mandatory display was a mistake - but hasn't said anything about not forcing you to pick.)

Candace's Law

  • Dec. 11th, 2009 at 10:03 PM
Are people familiar with Godwin's Law? "As an online discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Nazis or Hitler approaches 1."

And once this happens, the person who invokes Hitler and/or Nazism, automatically loses.

We've noticed a similar trend in AG Fandom: When race is discussed in the AG fandom, the chances of someone declaring themselves totally not racist approaches 1.

The first person to invoke the idea "it's just marketing" loses.

(Can't decide if posting this directly to ag>18 is drama-llamaing.

Hey look, a streak

LJ just vomited a batch of backlogged notifications into my email. Not cool, LJ. I suppose it's rather poetically appropriate seeing as how I'm posting for the third day in a row, which while not a record is certainly unusual. New friends who thought I was only an occasional poster, sorry for the bait and switch.

Anyway, the storm system was rather slow moving, so December 9th ended up being the date of the first blizzard. Officially the blizzard warning didn't start until midnight, but it was blizzard-y enough yesterday that area schools got out early. The undergrads were making talk about classes possibly being canceled, but my reaction was "don't bet on it."

Then I got up this morning. Snow? Check. Wind? Check. Area schools? Closed. University classes? Canceled. University employees? Expected to make reasonable attempts to come in as scheduled. Well damn. Since my attempt to come in involved the force to be reckoned with that is the bus, I had no trouble. Wasn't even late. "Blizzard?" says the bus. "What blizzard?"

This blizzard, bus:

That's my dearly beloved but much maligned Cirrus under that blanket of seven inches (and counting) of snow. It's a good thing I have enough groceries and cat food to get to the weekend, because shoveling off the car is going to be a weekend job.
